Ardyn's body thrashed all through the last hour of his restless slumber. His mind and his dreams were not being kind to him this night. He was getting better. The nightmares were becoming fewer, however, they still haunted him time and time again.
He never could figure out what had initially caused his night terrors. They came like a flood and would disappear like an afterthought. He hated them, for they provided him with so little sleep. There was a small silver-lining to his nighttime troubles; his familiar would always come to him by the time he woke. Most nights he would wake with his familiar already curled up with him. Other nights, he would wake right before his door would open and he would feel the slight shift of the bed as Zach crawled next to him. He knew that this really wasn't a familiar's job. Zach couldn't protect Aj from his own mind. This witch would have to figure out how to stop them on his own.
Aj's body quivered as he jolted straight up. He glanced around, trying to find his bearings. Once he realized that the once vivid colors and images were nothing more than his own mind playing tricks on him, he sighed and ran his hand through his hair.
Ardyn quickly turned his light on and glanced around his room. There was no one. He couldn't see a soul. Literally. He let out a sigh again before he leaned back against his headboard. He couldn't see a soul. He pulled down his covers some, looking for a ferret. However, he didn't find one. He glanced puzzled around the room. "Maybe, for once, he is forcing me to face this on my own."
The eldest D'Angelo child leaned heavily against his headboard once more, "I could really use a hug from my ferret right about now." He mumbled softly as he closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose with his forefinger and thumb. "I could really use some apple juice too. That might be asking too much at this hour." He knew it was late. It was always late when he woke from such dreams. Normally, he would hug to his ferret and be able to fall back asleep, some nights he would hug to his ferret and stare at the wall opposite him. Other nights, when there was nothing to do the next day, he would lay up with Zach and simply talk. He always avoided the nightmares. He never liked talking about them. When your life is surrounded by mysterious colors, you never want to talk about how you dream of those colors eating you alive. It's suffocating.
Aj opened his eyes once more and stared up at the ceiling. "I want my ferret." He mumbled softly, "Though I'm being selfish. Or he spoiled me. Or both."
